Surrey Support Map
The interactive map highlights some of the key support that is generally freely available to state funded schools across the county
The interactive Surrey Support Map has been developed to aid school-based staff, wider services, and partners. It assists the implementation of a progressive and preventative strengths-based, whole-system, restorative and trauma informed approach to the health, wellbeing, inclusion and achievement of children and young people, strengthening a Surrey Healthy Schools culture.
This approach embraces the recommendations of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidance, social, emotional and mental wellbeing in primary and secondary education, and supports the Surrey Health and Wellbeing Strategy, Thrive Framework for System Change, and the Time for kids, parents, carers and practitioners principles.
Surrey Healthy Schools is part of the Surrey Local Offer. There is a wide range of services available across Surrey and the map highlights some of the key support that is generally freely available to state funded schools across the county. Within the map services have been placed to encourage early engagement. Services can be accessed effectively at several stages, dependent upon need. Additional helpful information, signposting, guidance and training opportunities is contained within the Surrey Healthy Schools Self-Evaluation Tool.
The Surrey Support Map (PDF) is progressive in design, not all services will be required for all children and young people. Resources selected should strengthen the school culture & values – for more information see the Surrey County Council Personal, Social, Health, Economics (PSHE) webpage.
Prevention
Prevention is central to what is promoted within the school culture and takes a universal approach. Examples can include positive role-modelling, embracing diversity, and having an in-depth appreciation and understanding of effective safeguarding and confidentiality, along with positive attitudes towards healthy eating, physical activity, sleep and the promotion of self-care. Establishing and maintaining a restorative culture that contributes to inclusive, anti-bullying and positive behaviour and relationships practices (including policies), is an essential aspect of a preventative school ethos. Effective practice can be further supported through positive relationships with parents, carers and the wider community, and creating a platform for young people to share their voice.
Early intervention
Early intervention is the act of identifying and providing effective and timely help and support for young people. Having an awareness and understanding of local need/issues as a school will help to ensure pupils are better supported and will assist in reducing the risk factors and increasing protective factors in a child or young person's life. The Surrey Health-Related Behaviours Questionnaire is an example of locally-based data.
Targeted support
Targeted support may be necessary when a higher level of need has been established; this will generally target a smaller population of individuals.
