Self Management and Recovery Training (SMART)

SMART Recovery (Self-Management and Recovery Training) is a programme to help people manage their recovery from any type of addictive behaviour. This includes addictive behaviour with substances such as alcohol, nicotine or drugs, or compulsive behaviours such as gambling, sex, eating, shopping, and self-harming.

SMART teaches self-empowerment and self-reliance in meetings that are educational, supportive and focused on open discussion. These meetings are free, but donations are welcome.

The 4-point programme:

  • Building and maintaining momentum
  • Coping with urges
  • Managing thoughts, feelings, and behaviours
  • Living a balanced life

There are several groups available in Surrey facilitated by trained group leaders.

For advice on how to start a SMART group in your area or train as a facilitator, visit the SMART Recovery website.

Mutual aid fellowship groups

Mutual aid fellowship groups are an international mutual aid network whose purpose is to help other members battle their addictions through a 12-step abstinence model.

Mutual aid fellowship groups in Surrey include:

Adfam and Al-Anon

Adfam and Al-Anon have lots of information and support for carers/significant others.

You can find groups in your local area, frequently asked question responses and other information relating to substance misuse and the wider effects on families on Adfam and Al-Anon's websites.
